Pressure-Natriuresis

Meaning

Pressure-Natriuresis is a fundamental physiological mechanism that precisely describes the direct, inverse relationship between systemic arterial blood pressure and the kidney’s inherent ability to excrete sodium and water. Specifically, even a slight increase in systemic arterial pressure leads to a significant and rapid increase in the renal excretion of sodium (natriuresis) and water (diuresis). This crucial homeostatic reflex is considered the primary long-term determinant of blood pressure regulation, ensuring that overall fluid volume and electrolyte balance are accurately maintained over time.
