Preimplantation Genetic Testing

Meaning

A highly specialized laboratory technique used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) to analyze the genetic material of embryos for chromosomal abnormalities (aneuploidy) or specific single-gene defects prior to their transfer into the uterus. This testing procedure allows for the selective implantation of embryos confirmed to be free from the screened genetic conditions, significantly enhancing the probability of a successful, healthy pregnancy. PGT is an invaluable tool in reproductive medicine for couples at risk of transmitting inherited genetic disorders.
