Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

Meaning

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a sophisticated genetic testing procedure performed on embryos created during In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) before they are transferred to the uterus for implantation. The clinical purpose is to identify specific single-gene disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, or known genetic mutations in the embryo. PGD is a critical clinical tool utilized to increase the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy in couples known to be carriers of serious inherited genetic conditions.
