Pregnenolone Synthesis

Meaning

The fundamental biochemical process within the mitochondria of steroidogenic tissues, primarily the adrenal glands, gonads, and brain, where cholesterol is enzymatically converted into pregnenolone, the foundational precursor for all steroid hormones. This synthesis is the rate-limiting step in the entire steroid cascade, often referred to as the “Mother Hormone.” Its production level is a critical indicator of the body’s overall capacity to generate downstream sex hormones, mineralocorticoids, and glucocorticoids.
