Pregnenolone Steal Phenomenon

Meaning

The Pregnenolone Steal Phenomenon, also known as Pregnenolone Shunt, is a theoretical but clinically relevant concept describing the metabolic diversion of the common steroid precursor, pregnenolone, away from its normal synthetic pathways toward the production of stress-related hormones, primarily cortisol. This occurs under conditions of chronic, sustained stress that activate the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, prioritizing survival hormone production over the synthesis of other vital steroid hormones like DHEA, progesterone, and sex steroids. The consequence is a potential deficiency in these non-survival hormones, contributing to symptoms of fatigue and hormonal imbalance.
