PR-A

Meaning

Progesterone Receptor A, or PR-A, represents one of the two primary isoforms of the progesterone receptor, a crucial nuclear protein. It originates from the same gene as Progesterone Receptor B (PR-B) but possesses a distinct N-terminal region due to differential transcription initiation. This receptor functions as a ligand-activated transcription factor, binding progesterone and subsequently modulating the expression of specific genes. Notably, PR-A often acts as a dominant repressor, inhibiting the activity of PR-B and other steroid hormone receptors, including the estrogen receptor.
