Meaning

PPARs, or Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors, are a group of ligand-activated nuclear receptor proteins that function as transcription factors, playing a central role in regulating gene expression related to metabolism, cellular differentiation, and inflammation. The three main subtypes—PPAR$alpha$, PPAR$gamma$, and PPAR$beta/delta$—are critical sensors of lipid and glucose homeostasis, acting as master regulators of adipogenesis, insulin sensitivity, and fatty acid oxidation. Clinically, synthetic ligands for these receptors are utilized as therapeutic agents, such as fibrates and glitazones, to manage dyslipidemia and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Understanding their function is essential for addressing metabolic health and longevity.
