PPAR-gamma

Meaning

PPAR-gamma, or Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma, is a ligand-activated nuclear receptor protein that functions as a key transcription factor, primarily expressed in adipose tissue, the colon, and immune cells. It is recognized as a master regulator of adipogenesis, lipid metabolism, and systemic glucose homeostasis, making it a pivotal target in the clinical management of insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes. Clinical pharmacology has successfully targeted this receptor with a class of insulin-sensitizing drugs known as thiazolidinediones.
