PPAR-γ

Meaning

PPAR-γ, or Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma, is a ligand-activated nuclear receptor protein that functions as a master transcriptional regulator of adipogenesis, glucose metabolism, and inflammatory responses. As a nuclear receptor, it binds to specific DNA sequences to modulate the expression of genes involved in fatty acid storage and glucose homeostasis. This receptor is highly expressed in adipose tissue, where it promotes the differentiation of pre-adipocytes into mature fat cells and enhances insulin sensitivity. Clinically, it is the molecular target for the thiazolidinedione class of drugs used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
