Potassium Binders

Meaning

Potassium binders are a class of oral medications designed to reduce dangerously high levels of serum potassium, a condition known as hyperkalemia, by sequestering potassium ions within the gastrointestinal tract. These agents are typically non-absorbable polymers or inorganic compounds that exchange sodium, calcium, or hydrogen ions for potassium ions. They are a critical therapeutic intervention for patients with chronic kidney disease or those taking medications that elevate potassium, such as certain heart failure drugs.
