Postpartum Thyroiditis

Meaning

Postpartum Thyroiditis (PPT) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition of the thyroid gland that occurs in women within the first year after childbirth, manifesting as a transient and often biphasic pattern of thyroid dysfunction. The initial phase is typically hyperthyroidism, caused by the release of stored thyroid hormone, followed by a period of hypothyroidism as the gland becomes depleted. This condition is a common form of thyroid dysfunction in the postpartum period and requires careful clinical monitoring.
