Postpartum Depression

Meaning

Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a complex mood disorder characterized by a non-psychotic, major depressive episode that occurs following childbirth, typically within the first four weeks, but potentially up to a year. This condition involves persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty bonding with the infant, significantly impairing the mother’s daily functioning and well-being. From a hormonal perspective, PPD is strongly linked to the rapid and dramatic fluctuations in sex and stress hormones that occur immediately after delivery.
