Postmenopausal Hypertension

Meaning

Postmenopausal Hypertension is the clinical condition defined by a persistently elevated systemic arterial blood pressure that either develops anew or significantly worsens in severity following the permanent cessation of menstrual cycles. This specific form of hypertension is strongly and causally linked to the profound, abrupt decline in endogenous estrogen production that is characteristic of the menopausal transition. The loss of estrogen’s well-established protective vascular effects directly contributes to increased arterial stiffness, endothelial dysfunction, and a subsequent, significant elevation in cardiovascular risk for women.
