Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy

Meaning

Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy (PHT) is the clinical administration of exogenous hormones, typically estrogen alone or in combination with progestogen, to alleviate menopausal symptoms and mitigate long-term health risks associated with estrogen deficiency. This specific treatment is prescribed following the cessation of ovarian function and the permanent, significant drop in endogenous sex steroid production. PHT aims to restore a more optimal hormonal milieu to address severe vasomotor symptoms, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and progressive bone density loss. Clinical decision-making for PHT requires a careful, individualized assessment of a patient’s risks and benefits.
