Post-Transcriptional Regulation

Meaning

The control mechanisms that modulate gene expression after the initial transcription of DNA into a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule has occurred, but before the final protein is synthesized. These regulatory steps include mRNA splicing, editing, transport, and degradation, as well as the translation rate of the mRNA by ribosomes. This fine-tuning is a critical layer of biological control, allowing for rapid and precise adjustments to cellular protein output.
