Post-Receptor Signaling

Meaning

The entire cascade of biochemical events that occurs inside a cell immediately following the binding of a hormone or ligand to its specific receptor on the cell surface or within the cytoplasm. This intricate process involves a sequence of protein-protein interactions, phosphorylations, and second messenger generation, ultimately translating the external hormonal message into a specific cellular action. Dysfunction in post-receptor signaling can lead to hormone resistance, even when circulating hormone levels are adequate.
