Post-Pill Amenorrhea

Meaning

Post-pill amenorrhea is the clinical term for the absence of menstruation for six months or more following the discontinuation of combined oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), excluding pregnancy. This condition represents a transient, drug-induced suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis that persists longer than the expected return to normal cycling. While OCPs do not cause permanent infertility, this delay in the resumption of ovulation can be a source of distress for women attempting conception. It is a diagnosis of exclusion, requiring the clinician to rule out other causes of secondary amenorrhea.
