Post-Exertion Recovery

Meaning

The complex physiological process that occurs immediately following physical exercise or significant physical stress, involving the restoration of muscle glycogen stores, repair of muscle tissue micro-damage, re-establishment of fluid and electrolyte balance, and the return of the cardiovascular and endocrine systems to pre-exertion homeostasis. Optimal post-exertion recovery is a critical determinant of training adaptation, injury prevention, and long-term athletic and metabolic health. Inadequate recovery can lead to chronic fatigue and HPA axis dysregulation.
