Post-Exercise Metabolism

Meaning

Post-exercise metabolism refers to the collection of physiological processes that occur in the body immediately following the cessation of physical activity, aimed at restoring the body to its pre-exercise homeostatic state. This period is characterized by an elevated metabolic rate and increased oxygen consumption, often termed Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption or EPOC, which facilitates recovery and adaptation. The body prioritizes replenishing energy stores, repairing cellular structures, and normalizing physiological parameters like core temperature and pH.
