Post-Androgen Abuse Hypogonadism

Meaning

Post-Androgen Abuse Hypogonadism is a clinical condition characterized by deficient endogenous testosterone production and/or impaired spermatogenesis following the cessation of supraphysiological doses of exogenous androgens, such as anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS). The excessive external hormone administration suppresses the body’s natural production via a negative feedback loop on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This results in secondary hypogonadism, which can manifest as symptoms of low testosterone, including fatigue, decreased libido, and mood disturbances, and may persist long after the abuse stops. Appropriate clinical management often requires a specialized endocrine approach.
