POMC Neurons

Meaning

A population of neuroendocrine cells located primarily in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus that synthesize and process the prohormone Pro-Opiomelanocortin (POMC). These neurons are central integrators of metabolic and energy balance signals, playing a critical role in regulating appetite, satiety, and body weight. Their functional status is crucial for understanding and treating obesity and other metabolic disorders.
