POMC Neuron

Meaning

Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are a distinct population of neurons primarily situated within the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. These specialized cells synthesize and process the precursor protein POMC, which is subsequently cleaved into several crucial neuropeptides, including alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and beta-endorphin. Their fundamental role involves the precise regulation of energy balance, influencing both appetite and metabolic rate.
