Polyunsaturated Fat

Meaning

Polyunsaturated Fat (PUFA) is a type of dietary lipid characterized by the presence of two or more double bonds within its fatty acid chain, distinguishing it from saturated and monounsaturated fats. Essential PUFAs, such as the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained through diet, serving as critical structural components of cell membranes and precursors for signaling molecules. Adequate intake of these fats is vital for cardiovascular, neurological, and hormonal health.
