Polypharmacy

Meaning

Polypharmacy is the clinical scenario characterized by the concurrent use of multiple medications, typically defined as five or more, by a single patient. While sometimes necessary, this practice significantly increases the risk of adverse drug interactions, cascading side effects, and prescribing cascades, which can complicate the management of hormonal balance and overall health. It is a major concern in geriatric and complex chronic care.
