Polygenic Risk Score

Meaning

A Polygenic Risk Score is a calculated value representing an individual’s inherited predisposition to a particular trait or disease, derived from the cumulative effect of many common genetic variants, each contributing a small amount of risk. It quantifies the combined influence of multiple genes across the genome, rather than focusing on single-gene disorders. This score summarizes an individual’s genetic susceptibility to complex conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or certain hormonal imbalances.
