Polycythemia Vera

Meaning

Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by the overproduction of all three blood cell lines, but predominantly red blood cells, leading to an abnormally high hematocrit and blood viscosity. This hematological condition increases the risk of thrombosis, stroke, and cardiovascular events due to the thickened blood. In the context of hormonal health, it is a significant potential side effect and contraindication to certain hormone therapies, particularly testosterone replacement, which can stimulate erythropoiesis.
