Polycythemia Management

Meaning

Polycythemia Management refers to the clinical strategies employed to monitor and mitigate the risk associated with an abnormally high concentration of red blood cells (erythrocytosis), a condition often observed as a side effect of exogenous testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). This management typically involves regular hematocrit and hemoglobin monitoring to detect rising red blood cell mass. Therapeutic interventions, when indicated, primarily include phlebotomy, which is the controlled removal of blood, or adjustments to the TRT regimen, such as lowering the dose or changing the route of administration. Effective management is crucial for reducing the risk of thrombotic events.
