Polycythemia

Meaning

Polycythemia is a clinical condition characterized by an abnormal increase in the concentration of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the circulating blood, often quantified by elevated hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. While it can be a primary bone marrow disorder, in the context of hormonal health, it is most frequently encountered as a secondary effect, particularly following exogenous testosterone administration. This condition increases blood viscosity, thereby elevating the risk of thromboembolic events such as stroke or myocardial infarction.
