Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Meaning

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are man-made chemicals known for their environmental stability and lipophilic nature, leading to bioaccumulation in human and animal tissues. In the context of hormonal health, PCBs are classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) because they interfere with the synthesis, metabolism, and action of endogenous hormones, notably thyroid and sex steroids. Exposure to PCBs is a recognized environmental risk factor for systemic endocrine dysfunction.
