Podocyte Function

Meaning

Podocyte Function is the essential physiological role performed by the highly specialized epithelial cells that intimately wrap around the glomerular capillaries in the kidney. Their primary function is to serve as the final, highly selective barrier in the blood filtration process, preventing the passage of large macromolecules, notably plasma proteins like albumin, into the nascent urinary filtrate. Compromised podocyte function is the hallmark of proteinuria and various nephropathies.
