Platelet Activation

Meaning

Platelet activation is the process by which circulating platelets, small anucleate cell fragments in the blood, undergo a change in shape and surface chemistry, leading to aggregation and the initiation of primary hemostasis and thrombosis. This process is a critical component of wound healing, but inappropriate or excessive activation contributes to pathological conditions such as arterial and venous blood clots. In hormonal health, certain hormone therapies can influence platelet function, necessitating careful monitoring of thrombotic risk.
