Plaque Instability

Meaning

Plaque instability describes the inherent vulnerability of an atherosclerotic plaque within an arterial wall to rupture, a critical event precipitating acute thrombotic occlusion. This structural compromise involves a thin fibrous cap over a lipid-rich necrotic core, making it prone to stress and enzymatic degradation. Rupture exposes thrombogenic material, initiating clot formation that can impede blood flow.
