Pituitary Somatotroph

Meaning

A specific type of acidophil cell located in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland that is responsible for the synthesis and pulsatile secretion of Growth Hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin. These cells are central to the regulation of somatic growth, metabolism, and body composition throughout the lifespan. Their activity is tightly controlled by hypothalamic hormones, primarily Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin. Dysfunction of the somatotrophs can lead to clinical syndromes like gigantism, acromegaly, or GH deficiency.
