Pituitary Recrudescence

Meaning

Pituitary recrudescence describes the clinical phenomenon of the pituitary gland’s suppressed function spontaneously or pharmacologically recovering, specifically its ability to resume the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropins. This term is most often used in the context of male fertility preservation after the cessation of exogenous steroid or testosterone administration, where the pituitary must restart the production of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). Successful recrudescence is necessary for the restoration of endogenous testosterone production and spermatogenesis.
