Pituitary Gland Responsiveness

Meaning

Pituitary gland responsiveness refers to the functional capacity of the pituitary gland, the “master gland” of the endocrine system, to detect and appropriately respond to regulatory signals from the hypothalamus and peripheral hormones. A high degree of responsiveness is essential for the timely and adequate release of tropic hormones, such as Growth Hormone, TSH, and ACTH, which in turn regulate downstream endocrine glands. Impaired responsiveness can lead to widespread hormonal deficiencies and systemic dysfunction.
