Pituitary Desensitization

Meaning

Pituitary desensitization is a clinically induced or pathological state where the cells of the pituitary gland become less responsive to the stimulatory signals from the hypothalamus, specifically Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) or its synthetic analogs. This phenomenon leads to a significant reduction in the pituitary’s subsequent release of its own trophic hormones, such as Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). It is a key therapeutic strategy in conditions requiring the suppression of gonadal hormone production.
