Pituitary Desensitization

Meaning

A state where the anterior pituitary gland exhibits a diminished biological response to normal levels of hypothalamic releasing hormones, such as GnRH or TRH, often due to prolonged overstimulation or receptor downregulation. This blunting of responsiveness can lead to secondary hypofunction in downstream endocrine glands, impacting overall hormonal axis output. Clinically, this is a significant consideration when managing chronic stimulation.
