Pituitary Adenomas

Meaning

Pituitary adenomas are benign, slow-growing tumors that arise from the epithelial cells of the anterior pituitary gland, the master gland of the endocrine system. These tumors are clinically significant because they can either hypersecrete specific pituitary hormones, leading to syndromes like Cushing’s disease or acromegaly, or they can be non-functional, causing symptoms by compressing adjacent structures. Their diagnosis and management are central to neuroendocrinology, requiring careful hormonal and radiological assessment. These tumors can profoundly disrupt the body’s hormonal equilibrium.
