Pitting Edema

Meaning

Pitting Edema is a specific clinical sign characterized by the persistent indentation that remains visible in the skin after moderate pressure has been applied and released over an area of subcutaneous fluid accumulation. This finding signifies an excess of interstitial fluid that is relatively low in protein, often resulting from systemic imbalances such as congestive heart failure, chronic venous insufficiency, or significant hormonal dysregulation affecting renal sodium and water handling. The presence of pitting confirms a substantial and persistent shift in Starling forces across the capillary wall.
