Phytoestrogen Interaction

Meaning

Phytoestrogen interaction describes the biological activity that occurs when plant-derived compounds, known as phytoestrogens, engage with the human endocrine system, primarily through binding to estrogen receptors (ERs). These non-steroidal compounds, such as isoflavones and lignans, possess a chemical structure similar to endogenous estradiol, allowing them to exert weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects. The nature of the interaction is highly dependent on the concentration, the specific phytoestrogen, and the type of estrogen receptor (ERα or ERβ) involved.
