Phytase

Meaning

Phytase is a specific class of phosphatase enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phytic acid, or phytate, a common storage form of phosphorus in many plant seeds and grains. This enzymatic action releases inorganic phosphate and myo-inositol, making these compounds available for absorption and utilization within the gastrointestinal tract. In the context of hormonal health, phytase supplementation is clinically relevant because phytic acid acts as a potent chelator, binding to essential micronutrients like zinc, iron, and calcium, thereby reducing their intestinal bioavailability. By degrading phytate, phytase improves the absorption of these critical minerals, which are cofactors for numerous endocrine enzymes and signaling pathways.
