Physiological Stress Load

Meaning

Physiological Stress Load quantifies the cumulative burden placed upon the body’s allostatic systems, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the immune system, and the cardiovascular system, from both psychological and physical stressors. This metric is a clinical assessment of the body’s ongoing need for adaptation and repair, reflecting the total demand placed on homeostatic mechanisms. A persistently high load can lead to allostatic overload and subsequent pathology. It is the biological cost of chronic adaptation.
