Physiological Secretagogues

Meaning

Endogenous or naturally occurring substances that stimulate the secretion of another specific hormone or substance from an endocrine gland or secretory cell in a manner that closely mimics the body’s normal, rhythmic physiological release pattern. These agents are distinct from pharmacological agonists as they work within the native regulatory feedback loops to maintain homeostatic control. Ghrelin, for example, is a key physiological secretagogue for Growth Hormone.
