Physiological Rhythms

Meaning

Physiological rhythms are the cyclical, recurring variations in biological processes that occur with a regular, predictable periodicity, essential for the optimal timing of internal bodily functions. These rhythms include the 24-hour circadian rhythm, which governs the sleep-wake cycle and core body temperature, and ultradian and infradian rhythms, which operate on shorter or longer timescales, respectively. The coordination of these temporal patterns is fundamental to hormonal health, as the secretion of many key hormones, such as cortisol and melatonin, is strictly time-dependent.
