Physiological Rebound

Meaning

Physiological Rebound describes the phenomenon where a biological system, after being suppressed or significantly altered by an external factor or intervention, exhibits an exaggerated or overcompensatory response upon the cessation of that factor. In endocrinology, this is often observed when exogenous hormone therapy is abruptly stopped, leading to a temporary surge or crash in endogenous hormone production as the negative feedback loops attempt to restore equilibrium. Understanding and managing the physiological rebound is a critical consideration in clinical tapering protocols to ensure a smooth transition and minimize adverse patient symptoms.
