Physiological Function

Meaning

Physiological Function refers to the normal, characteristic actions or processes that occur within a living organism or any of its constituent parts, such as organs, tissues, or cells, to maintain life and health. This encompasses the full range of activities from cellular respiration and hormone secretion to cardiac output and cognitive processing. The clinical evaluation of physiological function provides objective data on the health and efficiency of the body’s homeostatic mechanisms. Optimal function is the ultimate goal of all health and wellness interventions.
