Physical Work Capacity

Meaning

The maximum measurable rate at which an individual can perform sustained, high-intensity physical activity, determined by the integrated efficiency of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems. Clinically, this is often quantified by metrics such as VO2max and lactate threshold, reflecting the body’s ability to generate and utilize Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) aerobically. High physical work capacity is a robust biomarker of overall metabolic health and is strongly correlated with longevity and resilience. It is a fundamental measure of physiological fitness.
