Phthalates

Meaning

Phthalates are a group of synthetic chemical compounds, widely used in plastics, cosmetics, and various consumer products, that function as potent endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). They are not chemically bound to the products, allowing them to leach easily into the environment and subsequently into the human body. Exposure to phthalates is a significant concern in hormonal health due to their ability to interfere with the synthesis, action, and metabolism of endogenous hormones, particularly androgens and estrogens.
