Phthalate Exposure

Meaning

Phthalate exposure describes the systemic absorption of phthalates, a class of synthetic chemicals primarily used to increase the flexibility and durability of plastics and as solvents in various consumer products, into the human body. These compounds are considered endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) because they can interfere with the synthesis, secretion, transport, action, or elimination of natural hormones, particularly sex steroids. Exposure is widespread, primarily occurring through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption from food packaging, cosmetics, and medical devices. Clinically, concerns center on potential reproductive, developmental, and metabolic health effects, especially during critical windows of vulnerability.
