Photoreceptor Stimulation

Meaning

Photoreceptor stimulation is the process by which light energy is transduced into electrical signals within the specialized photoreceptor cells of the retina, initiating the visual process and crucially influencing non-visual biological functions. Beyond sight, the stimulation of the intrinsically photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells (ipRGCs) is paramount for synchronizing the body’s master circadian clock, the SCN. This light-induced signaling is a primary zeitgeber for regulating the sleep-wake cycle and diurnal hormonal rhythms.
